‘Borderlands 3’ Announcement Coming At Pax South

Borderlands 3 has been rumored for quite a while now, but it sounds as if the game will become a reality in the very near future. Borderlands 3 was actually hinted at on the opening day of Pax South, and Gearbox Software has said there will be a full reveal come Sunday. If the Borderlands 3 game is indeed a reality, it would make for a very big year for the franchise.

Earlier this week, the company announced that Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Presequel are going to be remastered and relaunched on the PS4 and Xbox One later this year. That really shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. The Borderlands franchise is simply following in the footsteps of so many other popular game titles that are looking to take advantage of the popularity and added power of the current generation consoles.

Of course, Gearbox is playing it cagey regarding an actual Borderlands 3 announcement. The company was asked on Friday whether Borderlands 3 might be coming down the pike. Studio head Randy Pitchford made it clear he wasn’t ready to give an answer right then and there.

When asked about the arrival of another Borderlands title, Gematsu reports Pitchford answered, “I’ll tell you what. We don’t know — that’s the honest answer — but if you come back to our main theater panel on Sunday, you might get a little more than that.”

Of course, the truth of the matter is it seems unlikely that Gearbox doesn’t know whether Borderlands 3 is coming today, but they will know about another Borderlands on Sunday’s panel. It’s more likely the company is planning an official rollout and didn’t want to talk about it before it could put its entire presentation together. The description of the Sunday panel also seems to hint of a big announcement or two.

“This is your opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look at Gearbox Software and get the latest news and updates on ‘Borderlands’ and upcoming Gearbox titles! We will have never-before-seen reveals, exclusives and surprises, so don’t miss out!”

This is hardly the first time there have been rumblings of Borderlands 3. In fact, a sequel to Borderlands 2 has been talked about since 2012. Back then, Gearbox’s lead writer, Anthony Burch, said the team was tossing around ideas about another new Borderlands games. Days after Burch made that announcement, Pitchford took to Twitter to quash Borderlands 3 rumors. The company said it wasn’t working on a Borderlands 3 as late as February of last year, but it looks like Gearbox has finally started to work on a new Borderlands game. We’ll find out more about a possible Borderlands 3 on Sunday.
