Robert Kirkman recently mentioned that The Walking Dead spinoff will be different than the current series. And thanks to unauthorized leaks of the pilot script, now we know he wasn’t kidding!
[Warning: Spoilers Ahead!]
Bleeding Cool obtained a copy of The Walking Dead spinoff pilot script and posted it to its website yesterday. They’ve since been issued a cease and desist from Rainbow Media, but as Bleeding Cool intimated, there are still several sites, including Vanity Fair that have posted photos of the script pages themselves.
At first thought to be the name of the entire show, before confirmed by International Business Times that it was only the pilot title, Fear The Walking Dead actually takes us back in time before Rick Grimes awakens at the start of the current Walking Dead show.
Written by Walking Dead co-creator Robert Kirkman and Low Winter Sun‘s writer/producer Dave Erickson, dialogue from a CDC Virologist confirms the prequel-esque nature of the setting:
“I want to dispel a rumor that these people are deceased … they are not. The dead do not walk among us …”
Clearly, the zombie plague has still not reached the general public if the CDC is still speculating on whether or not a zombie is a living thing or a dead thing, a fact Bleeding Cool appreciates.
“The intro gives you a swerve, but the infection has not taken hold yet. The ‘walkers’ are not yet known to the population at large, as society stands on the cusp of its own destruction.”
Which in-and-of itself paints a vastly different picture than the current incarnation. Series creator Robert Kirkman himself once described the current Walking Dead show as what happens when a zombie movie ends. So, Fear The Walking Dead looks to finally show us the middle part we missed along the way. The only question left is whose eyes will we be seeing this through.
“I will say that this is going to be a show about family,” Kirkman told Entertainment Weekly.
“But it’s going to be a show about a different type of family that we haven’t explored in The Walking Dead thus far… you’ll get the kind of things that you expect from a Walking Dead story. But, at the same time, we’ll want to tell these stories in a completely different way with completely different people in a completely different setting that’s going to make for a fundamentally different show. I think the look and feel of The Walking Dead spinoff is going to be startlingly different.”
