Spoiler Alert: A Reunion Not Likely For ‘Grey’s Anatomy’s’ Callie and Arizona And They May Start Dating Again
With only eight days until new episodes of Grey’s Anatomy begin to air, the show’s creator, Shonda Rhimes, isn’t going to make Calzona fans particularly happy. Most fans of the show’s lesbian couple are still reeling from their abrupt break-up, and now Rhimes indicates that they may consider dating again, but with other people.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Rhimes said it was time to explore the couple as individuals, especially Dr. Arizona Robbins, played by Jessica Capshaw.
“It’s lovely to get to know Arizona not as somebody in a relationship with Callie and as this person who has come through this relationship with Callie and who she is now. We’re trying to figure out who she is now and it’s interesting to see Callie figure out who she is now.”
The show is going to explore both characters as doctors, but also as a separated couple trying to learn how to be friends and co-parents to their daughter Sofia. As reported by the Inquisitr, Capshaw stated that Calzona fans will not be teased with a will they or won’t they get back together again scenario, and the couple will stay out of each other’s way, at least for the next six episodes.
Arizona’s focus is likely to be on her job for the time being; she is doing a fellowship in fetal surgery and trying to save her mentor’s life with the help of neurosurgeon Dr. Amelia Shepherd. However, Dr. Callie Torres, played by Sara Ramirez, may be contemplating entering the dating scene again with the encouragement of her friend and fellow surgeon, Dr. Owen Hunt.
There is always the possibility that Callie will date both women and men as she dips her toes back into the dating pool because she is bisexual. Rhimes said that she and Ramirez had long discussions about how to represent bisexuality as it hasn’t really been done before on network television, which surprises Rhimes.
“I’ve read a lot about that concept that bisexuality has not had a lot of support. One of my favorite things that we did in the Callie and Arizona episode is Callie announcing that she’s bisexual, which by the way, I think nobody has ever done that on television, like ‘I’m bisexual,’ which I think is crazy.”
TVLine reported that there is a possibility that a baby storyline could re-emerge for Callie as well. Prior to Callie deciding to end her marriage, she and Arizona were looking into surrogacy so they could have another baby. There is also the possibility that she could become involved with Owen, because he too wants to have a child. While Rhimes once said that Owen and Callie were people who should never be together, she now says that she will not dismiss the possibility outright.
“I have thought of that — and I don’t know why that is still not a possibility. I don’t know why you think that’s not a possibility. Yeah, we’ve thought of every possibility for Owen and how he can have a baby — believe me.”
However, Rhimes still hopes there is a possibility for Callie and Arizona to reunite as they are, to her, the perfect couple.
“For me, I think they’re the perfect couple but that’s not to say they’re going to be together. For me, they’re the perfect couple. It would make me very sad if they were apart. That doesn’t mean that they’re going to be able to work out their problems and get it together in time, for when ever the show is going to end. But I hope so. If they can, I think it would be amazing.”
