When you think of Johnny Depp, a host of characters spring to mind. The one thing that you could expect with any role that Depp undertook is that he always cut a dash. Whether Depp was sporting the wild hair and plaited beard of Captain Sparrow, the flyaway red hair of the Mad Hatter, or the groomed mustache of the FBI agent in Donnie Brasco, Depp rarely looked anything less than dashing. Without doubt, Johnny Depp was one of Hollywood’s coolest heartthrobs. However, shocking pictures in today’s Express suggest that Johnny’s pin-up days may well be behind him.
The Mirror points out that Depp has never been known for his clean-cut image, but pictures emerging from the world premiere of his new movie Mortdecai in Berlin on Sunday night show Depp looking disheveled, overweight, and haggard. The 51-year-old star was sporting his trademark shades as he joined Paul Bettany and director David Koepp on the red carpet. Dressed in an over-sized black mid-length jacket to beat off the chill, Johnny also wore a navy shirt and dark denim waistcoat with a pair of dark jeans.
Completing his look, Johnny also wore a pair of scuffed black boots. Johnny wore several heavy chains, but his trademark scarves were missing. Depp was unshaven, and his hair lank was greasy.
The Daily Mail reports that Mortdecai leading lady Gwyneth Paltrow and Johnny’s right hand man in the movie, Ewan McGregor, were both absent from the premiere. The pair were also absent from the photo-call earlier in the day.
In Mortdecai, Johnny Depp plays a charismatic art dealer on a mission to recover a stolen painting rumored to contain the code to a bank account filled with Nazi gold. The movie is adapted from the first installment of the The Mortdecai Trilogy books by Kyril Bonfiglioli.
Co-star Paul Bettany plays Mortdecai’s henchman in the movie. He and Johnny first met on the set of The Tourist, and they struck up an immediate friendship.
Bettany said, “Johnny and I met across a crowded room, and I just had a feeling we would be lifelong friends. And that transpired. It was on the set of The Tourist in Venice. I looked at him and he looked at me, and we haven’t stopped laughing since.”
Paltrow, who plays Depp’s wife in the movie also praised him, saying, “Johnny is a true genius and when he works he envisages everything. You know I read the script and I thought it was really funny. I have always wanted to work with Johnny and I’m so lucky they asked me as he is amazing. We had so much fun on set that it was hard not to laugh.”
Paltrow also joked that in one scene where she and Depp kissed, she kept gagging because of his mustache, and the scene had to be re-shot several times. Sadly for Johnny, if his looks slip much further, Paltrow may not be the only one gagging.
