‘Doctor Who’: Season 9 Underway, Capaldi ‘Delighted,’ And Thoros Of Myr Guest Stars

Filming began on the ninth season of Doctor Who this week, and the cast and crew are ready for action. According to Coming Soon, the BBC confirmed in a press release that Peter Capaldi will be resuming his role as the 12th Doctor.

Shooting began in Cardiff this week, and it appears as if the 12th Doctor and crew are ready to continue their adventures through time and space.

“The adventures begin again for myself and Jenna and I’m delighted to be back filming my second series of ‘Doctor Who’.”

This statement from Capaldi signifies the British actor’s love of Doctor Who. Indeed, watching him in the titular role, you can see his excitement and joy pour out of his performance. It also reminds viewers that, as the Inquisitr reported, Jenna Coleman will be reprising her role as companion to The Doctor throughout the upcoming season.

Among the regulars are several guest appearances guaranteed to draw attention this season. Most notably, Game of Thrones actor Paul Kaye will be making his Doctor Who debut. Kaye is best known for his role as Thoros of Myr on Game of Thrones, and will be in a two-part episode of the 12th doctors’ second season. Unsurprisingly, Kaye is thrilled to land a part alongside Capaldi as the 12th Doctor.

“As a kid of the 1970s, the two shows you always watched were ‘Top of the Pops’ and ‘Doctor Who’, they were unmissable. I actually wrote a song called, ‘Looking for Davros’ in my first punk band and I sang it like a demented Dalek. I got to present TOTP back in the mid ’90’s and landing this role in ‘Doctor Who’ completes the dream double.”

The two-part Doctor Who episode currently filming was written by Toby Whitehouse, who also penned episodes for 11th Doctor Matt Smith, as well as an episode of the Doctor Who spinoff, Torchwood. As of yet, we still don’t have many details regarding what Kaye’s role will be. However, as Entertainment Weekly reported, Stephen Moffat weighed in on the new season and the two-part Doctor Who episode.

“An amazing guest cast for a brilliantly creepy two-parter by Toby Whithouse,” adding, “Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman are back in Cardiff, back in the box, and back in action for one of our scariest adventures yet!”

The cast is rounded out by Morven Christie, Arsher Ali, Colin McFarlane, Steven Robertson, Neil Fingleton, Zaqi Ismail, and Sophie Stone.

It appears that all the components are there. All of the key players are in good spirits and having a great deal of fun, as should be on the set of Doctor Who. As Capaldi kicks off the highly anticipated second season of his run as The Doctor, all we can do is wait for the fall 2015 premier, which so far promises to deliver big science fiction fun in the only way Doctor Who can: a touch of menace, a hint of danger, and the perfect comedic timing of Capaldi Coleman.
