‘Once Upon A Time’ Casts ‘Mad Men’ Star: Is He The Sorcerer?

Once Upon a Time is introducing another new character, and he comes with a fun mystery to solve — is he who he says he is, or is he more dangerous than he first appears to be?

According to TV Line, Mad Men actor Patrick Fischler will play a humble peddler on the ABC series, but Once Upon a Time viewers know that most characters on the show have alter egos — a friendly ice cream shop owner might be a powerful Snow Queen, your waitress could be a werewolf, and the hunky new author in town might turn out to be a hunk of wood.

TV Line reports that Patrick Fischler has a “key recurring role” on the show, and this makes it sound like the peddler is going to end up being a pretty important character. He “comes across as well-intentioned but is actually a quick-witted, arrogant man with reckless impulses.” The new character will appear in Storybrooke and the Enchanted Forest.

It’s possible that Fischler’s peddler is actually the author of Henry’s storybook, the mysterious Sorcerer whose magic hat was stolen by Rumplestiltskin, or both. As the Inquisitr previously reported, showrunners Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz reassured viewers that the identity of the Sorcerer will be revealed before the end of Season 4. However, they wouldn’t say whether the Sorcerer and the Author of Henry’s storybook are one and the same.

Once Upon a Time fans know that Hook traded his beloved Jolly Roger to someone for a magic bean, but the show hasn’t revealed who Hook made his trade with. Perhaps the pirate bartered with Fischler’s character — it wouldn’t be that surprising for a fairy tale peddler to be in possession of magic beans.

If Fischler’s Once Upon a Time character is based on a peddler from a Disney movie, the only possibility that comes to mind is the merchant who appears at the beginning of Aladdin. He introduces the story by showing viewers the magic lamp that the genie once resided in. Perhaps the Once peddler is in possession of the lamp that Jafar got trapped in at the end of Once Upon a Time in Wonderland. Just imagine how much danger Storybrooke would be in if the Queens of Darkness got their hands on Jafar’s new home.

Kitsis told Entertainment Weekly that the second half of Season 4 will feature more of Will Scarlet’s story, and Will has a huge connection to Jafar. There have been no reports about Naveen Andrews reprising his role as the Aladdin baddie, but perhaps the final episodes of this season will set things up for his possible appearance during Season 5.

What do you think of Patrick Fischler’s casting in Once Upon a Time, and do you think the peddler will help or hurt the show’s heroes when it returns on March 1?
