Boston Black Lives Matter protesters shut down Interstate 93, after activists chained themselves to 1,200-pound barrels. Boston police officers report that multiple sections of the main interstate are now closed to commuters.
Interstate 93 Black Lives Matter protesters are getting an earful from angry commuters who have been stuck on the highway. Drivers honked their horns and shouted unpleasant comments to the folks chained to the 1,200-pound barrels.
The Massachusetts State Police closed the northbound lane of Interstate 93 in Milton and the I-93 southbound portion of the highway in Medford near Mystic Avenue.
Some of the Black Lives Matter protesters have now been arrested and taken into Boston police custody. In a statement released by the Interstate 93 protesters, the group said that the traffic blocking event was designed to “confront white complacency in the systemic oppression of black people in Boston.”
Seventeen Boston Black Lives Matter protesters on I-93 southbound and six on Interstate 93 northbound have reportedly been arrested. The specific charges levied against the protesters is not yet known.
It remains unknown if any police, fire, or EMS squads attempting to help area residents were stuck in the traffic standstill created by the Black Lives Matter protest.
Boston police had to cut the chains hooking the Interstate 93 Black Lives Matter protesters from the 1,200-pound barrels, before the individuals could be handcuffed and arrested. Morning rush hour traffic was reportedly backed up for miles around the city.
The Black Lives Matter protests began after the Michael Brown shooting by Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson, and reignited around the country after the death of Eric Garner in New York City.
