‘Avatar 2’ Movie Delayed Until 2017, Says Director James Cameron

The Avatar 2 movie is seeing a delay, according to director James Cameron. Initially the second of four planned films was supposed to hit theaters on December 25, 2016, but apparently it won’t be ready by then.

Some fans have speculated that having three CG-ridden epics with realistic visuals would be a tough thing to pull off in the style that Peter Jackson made famous with the Lord of the Rings films. LOTR was filmed nonstop until the end, a daunting task for all involved, but the end result has proven to be a go-to fantasy epic. The difference is that Avatar was an almost entirely CG movie, occasionally filming the actors against a green screen, and that kind of graphic quality is something you can’t rush.

Just ask Michael Bay about Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen if you want a story about how rushing a film with such a level of visual intensity can end in disaster.

Much like Lord of the Rings, James Cameron was in New Zealand when the truth hit him. Filming the Avatar 2 movie and its two sequels like an epic would be a bit more ambitious than even he was prepared for. One does not simply rush an epic that depends largely on computer generated environments and characters.

It was there that Cameron made the statement of how he was going to film the upcoming trilogy.

“There’s a layer of complexity in getting the story to work as a saga across three films that you don’t get when you’re making a stand-alone film.

“We’re writing three simultaneously. And we’ve done that so that everything tracks throughout the three films. We’re not just going to do one and then make up another one and another one after that. And parallel with that, we’re doing all the design. So we’ve designed all the creatures and the environments.”

It could also be argued that the first movie in the series took Cameron 12 years to finish, but that was allegedly because the technology to pull it off hadn’t been available until the end of that period. Now that the Avatar 2 movie is being planned, along with two others expected to see theatrical releases a year apart, at least now the technology is there, but it will still take a while.

The new Avatar trilogy has been said to be about Jake Sully’s family on Pandora, and James Cameron compared it to The Godfather in scope.

We can only hope that when the new trilogy hits, the Avatar 2 plot isn’t simply a spiritual remake of other films, since the first Avatar was said to recycle the plot of nearly every environmental movie ever made. With the Avatar 2 release date now delayed, there is hope that Cameron’s new “epic” will live up to expectations and survive taking on the new Star Wars films at the box office.

Are you excited to see the Avatar 2 movie, despite its now-delayed release?
