Verizon Cancels $2 ‘Convenience’ Fee

Earlier this week Verizon announced that customers would be forced to pay a $2 convenience fee for paying their bills online. Today, the company cancelled that fee.

Verizon customers were livid about the fee and within hours of the announcement Twitter lit up with complaints about the company. Online petitions were also started as customers planned a boycott against the $2 fee.

Well, Verizon heard the complaints.

The company released a statement today, saying:

“The company made the decision (to cancel the $2 fee) in response to customer feedback about the plan, which was designed to improve the efficiency of those transactions… The company continues to encourage customers to take advantage of the numerous simple and convenient payment methods it provides.”

Dan Mead, president and chief executive officer of Verizon Wireless, told the Denver Post:

“At Verizon, we take great care to listen to our customers. Based on their input, we believe the best path forward is to encourage customers to take advantage of the best and most efficient options, eliminating the need to institute the fee at this time.”

Verizon really needed to see online petitions before it realized that customers would not appreciate an additional fee?

According to Fox News, Verizon’s $2 fee, which was scheduled to go into effect on January 15th, earned the interest of the FCC. The FCC said that it was looking into the matter “on behalf of American consumers.”
