Sears Store Closing List Revealed, 79 Stores Going Away First

Earlier this week Inquisitr reported on the closing of more than 100 Sears and Kmart locations after horrendous sales rocked the retail chain during the holiday shopping season. On Thursday Sears released a list that includes the first 79 closings.

In a statement regarding the closings Sears said it could not provide an estimated job loss figure at this time because employment “varies by store and format.” The company also failed to release the exact closing dates for the stores listed.

When all is said and done the company will have closed 100 to 120 Kmart and Sears locations across the United States.

Sears Holdings currently operates more than 4,000 stores throughout the United States and Canada making it one of the largest retailers in the world.

News of the closures comes at a time when stores Kmart locations open at least one year (same-store sales) slipped by 5.2% during the eight week lead-up to Christmas Day. The company’s Sears chain meanwhile experienced a 6% domestic sales slip.

Shares at Sears Holdings have fallen by more than 55% in 2011.

With an aging infrastructure at Sears and KMart stores I can’t say I’m surprised by the lack of customer acquisition, walking into the Kmart in my area is the equivalent of stepping back 30 years into a run down trailer park, there is literally nothing redeemable about my local stores location. Sears in the meantime provides almost nothing customers can’t already receive at lower prices through competitors such as Walmart, the much nicer Target locations and other local outlets.

Have you stopped shopping at Sears and KMart stores because of their lack of competitive pricing and outdated stores.
