PS4 Hard Drive Size: Expansion Made Even Easier With Nyko Peripheral

PS4 hard drive size will become a problem for most PlayStation 4 gamers as the must-play exclusives and cross-platform titles pour in. The 500 GB hard drive that Sony included in the console is going to fill up fast with new games weighing in at up to 50 GB each. Those game sizes will likely grow to double that soon, especially with the role-playing games that PlayStation consoles are known for.

After the initial hardware install and day one update, you’re left with around 400 GB to play with. If you do the math, that’s about eight huge games you can install to the hard drive before you’re left with one of two options; deleting games from the hard drive to make room or swapping the hard drive out for a bigger one.

The 9.5mm 2.5 inch SATA physical size limitation makes the latter option a difficult and pricey one, but Nyko has a peripheral in the works which will make upgrading your PS4 hard drive size much easier. The Data Bank literally expands the physical size of the PS4’s hard drive cover and replaces the original hard drive slot with a converter leading to a larger slot. This allows for a 3.5 inch hard drive and possibly thicker ones as well.

This could open the way for the ever-expanding limits of new hard drives currently hitting the market which will even make the current upgrade size of 2 TB look minimalistic.

While this new Nyko hard drive peripheral hasn’t yet hit the market or been officially tested for quality, this certainly opens up the possibilities. It might even spur Sony to create their own PS4 hard drive upgrade options to cash in on the growing necessity. The device is expected to hit in the first half of this year.

As the current console cycle goes into its second year, we will likely see the games grow larger in memory requirements, and the hard drive is going to need more room to store them. It’s inevitable, and it looks like Nyko is taking the proactive route with a peripheral we will need in the end.

Sadly, it doesn’t look like the Xbox One is getting much more than external hard drive support, but considering how much time and hacking it takes to reach the Xbox One hard drive, it may be the best option.

Some of us might not see the need to upgrade the PS4 hard drive size yet, but after having purchased and downloaded numerous digital titles on the Xbox 360, I can tell you it will happen. That 500 GB hard drive will only store so much.
