Braylon Edwards Released by 49ers

Braylon Edwards will no longer be wearings a San Francisco 49ers jersey. The wide receiver, who has had an unproductive season due to an injury, was released from the team this morning.

Edwards made the announcement this morning on his website. Edwards wrote:

“I was released today by the 49ers due to my injury that required more time to rehab and hasn’t allowed me to re-sync with the offense… I wish the 49ers organization the best of luck during the playoffs.”

Coach Jim Harbaugh confirmed the report but didn’t elaborate on the situation because “I haven’t talked to my team yet.”

Mercury News reports that the 49ers will be pretty thin at the wide receiver position this weekend as they try to clinch the No. 2 seed and a first round buy. Ted Ginn and Kyle Williams are both questionable for Sunday’s game and Tight end Delanie Walker is out indefinitely with a jaw injury. Michael Crabtree and Brett Swain will be taking on the majority of the work on Sunday.

Edwards added:

“People want results right now and I understand them. I want to make plays for this team just like I was doing last year, scoring touchdowns in the playoffs.”

Braylon Edwards was signed to a $1 million contract on August 4th but he hasn’t lived up to his pay grade. The receiver had only 15 receptions for 181 yards and no touchdowns in eight games. Edwards was set to receive an additional $2.4 million if he tallied more than 90 catches and made the Pro Bowl this season, but fell well short of that goal.

Edwards will be looking for a new job and he could be in need of the money pretty quick. Edwards just gave away more than $750,000 to help 79 students go to college.
