‘Back to the Future II’ – What Things From The Film Have Already Happened With 2015’s Arrival?

In 1989, Back to the Future II was released and it took Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) and Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) into the future. Actually, it took them to 2015, and it appeared as if that year would never make it – but now it has.

Well, we still have to wait until October 21, 2015 for the actual date in Back to the Future II to arrive.

Newsweek decided to take a look at what things have gone right and wrong from Back to the Future II with 2015’s arrival.

Remember, by this point in time, we are supposed to have hoverboards, tennis shoes with power laces, Mr. Fusion, and Jaws 19. Now, whether or not these things have happened yet isn’t a mystery, but there are just under 11 months for them to get done.

According to Global News, a number of the things have actually happened already, and Back to the Future II is proving to be a great predictor of 2015. Let’s take a closer look though, and see what has taken place and what hasn’t.

Shoes with Power Laces

They looked amazing back in 1989, and they still look amazing now. Replicas of these shoes were just recently released, with proceeds going to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.

Flying Cars

At times, you would think the technology is there, and it looks quite awesome when Doc and Marty head into Hill valley 2015 with cars flying and landing. Still, we haven’t gotten there just yet. We need to wait on the flip-in wheels and taking to the air.

Hoverboards

While we may not be exactly at the point that Griff’s gang and Marty were at in 2015, we are getting closer. Tony Hawk showed the world that hoverboards similar to those seen in Back to the Future II are coming.

Self-Drying and Auto-Fit Jackets

Not only could Marty’s jacket size adjust to fit him perfectly, but it could dry at the touch of a button. Some clothing will have water bead up and roll right off of it, but there’s nothing to make those size 40 pants cinch up to a size 32 waist.

Jaws 19

While this would have been pretty cool with that type of technology, we didn’t even get close. After the abomination that was Jaws: The Revenge back in 1987, it’s no surprise that they stopped making them at four.

Back to the Future II actually has gotten a few other things right with the arrival of 2015.

Remember the glasses worn by Marty McFly Jr. and his sister at the dinner table? Well, Google Glass is virtually the exact same thing. Looking at the video calls made Marty McFly Sr. to his boss and Needles in 2015, we can say that Skype and Facetime are very similar.

Sadly, we are still waiting on the food hydrators and the drop-down food garden centers in the kitchen. Maybe one day our food preparation will catch up with the world that was Hill Valley in Back to the Future II in 2015.
