Kathy Griffin Gets Nod From New Year’s Eve Rival Ryan Seacrest

Kathy Griffin is about to ring in the New Year with her dear friend, Anderson Cooper. The pair sat down with The New York Times over the weekend to discuss their unique chemistry. But judging by her Twitter feed, Griffin is also feeling the love from the host of a New Year’s celebration on a different network, Ryan Seacrest. Seacrest sent her a generic, but pleasant, note in advance of their respective telecasts.

That was not the end of their interaction, however, as Griffin tweeted out a shot of herself, Seacrest and Cooper around a dinner table. Whether or not they were dining together is unclear, but there were smiles all around.

Seacrest will be anchoring New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, which was for decades the territory of Dick Clark. Seacrest’s co-host will again be Jenny McCarthy, the new spouse of Donnie Wahlberg and former co-host of The View. McCarthy has been paired with Seacrest for four years running.

Earlier this month Griffin chided Seacrest in a tweet that showed off the prominent article in the Times that featured her and Cooper.

Although they come from different New Year’s universes, Kathy Griffin and Ryan Seacrest share a professional home at the E! network. Seacrest is producer of the Keeping Up With the Kardashians and its many spin-off series, and Griffin has just been announced as the new co-host of Fashion Police.

Griffin is taking the slot of the late Joan Rivers. The red-haired comedienne told People she spoke with Rivers’ daughter Melissa before accepting the job at Fashion Police.

“[I]t’s in the honor of my dear, dear friend Joan Rivers, and to take that chair means so much. I think I can hear her from heaven saying ‘Don’t hold back!’… Melissa gave me the blessing, which was a deal-breaker for me – or the deal-maker. That was what made me go, ‘If Melissa says it’s okay, then it’s okay.”

Kathy Griffin won’t be the only new face on Fashion Police. Giuliana Rancic and Kelly Osbourne are returning, but George Kotsiopoulos is not. Brad Goreski will join the team when it debuts January 12. They will have lots to discuss — and “police,” — as that is the day after The Golden Globes.

In the just-released promo for the new season, Griffin quips, “anything you wear can and will be held against you.”

Kathy Griffin kicks off the CNN New Year’s Eve coverage with Anderson Cooper at 9pm eastern time.
