Tom Coughlin Playing Waiting Game As Season Ends

Tom Coughlin has been the head coach of the New York Giants since 2004. Over the 10 years he has been with the team he has had many ups and downs, and has seen his job come under jeopardy before. Finishing the 2014 season with a 6-10 record means that Tom Coughlin must yet again wait and see if he still has a job.

As the Washington Times reports, if his players had a choice, Tom Coughlin would of course be back coaching the Giants in 2015.

“I would hope not,” quarterback Eli Manning said when asked whether he thought Tom Coughlin was going to be fired. “But that’s not my decision. Whatever happens, hopefully we’ll come back and figure it out. But we’ve got a great coaching staff and they did a great job this year. As players, we’ve got to do a better job.”

These kinds of comments are never new when talking about a coach being on the hotseat. Despite the fact that Tom Coughlin has a bit of a rep as being a firebrand, he has also proven to be a winner. That winning mentality is what many current Giants gravitate towards as another disappointing season comes to an end. In the head coach’s defense, there was a time when six wins seemed like a rather unrealistic goal this season.

Tom Coughlin has also made it clear he wants to return and he would like to bring his entire coaching staff back. That could end up being a sticking point for the long time head man who has seen his defensive coordinator especially come under fire. Coughlin’s team posted some truly bad defensive numbers, and Tom stuck up for his coaches after a game where that defense surrendered 34 points in the regular season finale loss.

“Yes, but I’m not going to say anything more about that or anything else today,” Tom Coughlin said when asked whether he wanted everyone back.

In some regards, the decision for him to return could be made easier for the team because his contract runs out after this season. It isn’t a matter of the front office having to eat a rather large contract in order to be rid of him. The team can simply tell him they no longer require his services. Considering the struggles in the last few seasons, there aren’t a lot of people who would be shocked if Tom Coughlin wasn’t asked back.
