Download ‘Wolf Of Wall Street’ and ‘Frozen’? Both Among Most Pirated Movies Of 2014

Even though 2014 was filled big blockbuster motion pictures just like any other, it didn’t stop online piracy from being one of the most common ways for people to see the movies that everyone was talking about like The Wolf Of Wall Street and Frozen, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Since a lot of awards contenders wait it out for later in the year so that they are still fresh in the minds of voters, there’s quit a few movies that don’t even get leaked until the tail end of the year. That’s great news for movie studios that are often banking on beating out free copies of The Wolf of Wall Street showing up on the internet.

From the list of 2014’s most pirated movies, it’s obvious that that was the case across the board. Nearly all of the most pirated movies of 2014 were actually 2013 movies, many of which made their way online before 2013 even ended, such as The Wolf of Wall Street and Frozen, the number one and two most downloaded movies of the year.

Of course, jokes are ripe for The Wolf of Wall Street‘s position on the list. After all, it’s a movie about breaking the rules and getting to the top doing it. Frozen on the other hand might seem confusing to some looking at the list. After all, it is a family movie — an audience that doesn’t fit the profile typical of people who pirate movies. Does that mean kids have figured out how to work The Pirate Bay, or that thrifty parents aren’t shelling out for copies of Frozen for their kids?

Other than The Wolf of Wall Street and Frozen, the rest of the list was also populated mostly by movies that came out in 2013. Gravity, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Legend of Hercules, X-Men: Days of Future Past, 12 Years a Slave and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire all also secured a spot on the list. Because these movies have had so much more time to rack up download counts, it won’t be until next year that we really see what the most downloaded movies legally released in 2014 were.

Another theory is that people went to go see a lot of “experience” movies like Guardians of the Galaxy in theaters instead of opting to download them instead. When they come around to watch them again, that might be a different story. After all, it’s harder to argue there’s some kind of morally corrupt quality in viewers of the most pirated movies when The Wolf of Wall Street sits right next to Frozen on the list.
