Don’t Expect Chris Pine To Star In Another ‘Jack Ryan’ Movie

Chris Pine has been pretty busy these last two months of 2014. He is currently in the comedy sequel Horrible Bosses 2, and he is also in the Disney musical Into the Woods. But there is one film from earlier this year that Pine said he is now regretting.

During an interview with Moviefone, Chris Pine was asked about the possibility of a sequel to Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. He said that he most likely will not be doing another film, since Shadow Recruit didn’t do too well at the box office.

“I don’t think it made enough money for that to happen. That’s one of my deep regrets, that we didn’t totally get that right. It’s a great franchise and if it’s not me then I hope it gets a fifth life at this point. It’s just great. I love the spy genre. I hope it’s done again and with a great story.”

The Chris Pine-starring action thriller brought in $135.5 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. That’s the lowest grossing entry for the franchise based on the character from the popular Tom Clancy novels.

The Jack Ryan franchise started back in 1990 with The Hunt for Red October, when Alec Baldwin played the character. Other actors who have played the role include Harrison Ford, who played Jack Ryan in two films, and Ben Affleck, who starred in 2002’s The Sum of All Fears. The highest grossing entry for the franchise is 1994’s Ford-starring Clear and Present Danger.

Before he took over the role of Jack Ryan, Chris Pine played Captain Kirk in the Star Trek reboots. There are plans to have him return as Captain Kirk, but Pine told Moviefone that he’s not sure on the status of the third one. However, he said he’s excited to start working on it, even though J.J. Abrams, who directed the other two films, won’t be directing the new one.

“I mean, I just want to see my friends; I want to work with my friends. We have such a great time together. I can’t wait to see what ridiculousness they throw us into. But above and beyond anything, they’re just a great bunch. We laugh a lot.”

As previously reported by the Inquisitr, Chris Pine was also asked if he had contacted Abrams about getting a role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. He said he didn’t, and if he did, it probably wouldn’t work in his favor.

“That would not have been the smartest move on my part, for my career, I would think.”
