Dutch scientists, for reasons I can’t fathom, have created a new strain of on of the deadliest known form of Influenza…the Bird Flu. The US government is very concerned about this development and U.S. National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity are evaluating how much of this information should even be allowed to be published, The Independent reported Tuesday.
“The fear is that if you create something this deadly and it goes into a global pandemic, the mortality and cost to the world could be massive,” a senior US government adviser told The Independent. It can also fall into the hands of terrorists and rogue nations.
Scientists are concerned that a process called reverse engineering, where the virus is deconstructed on a genetic level, is fairly common in the developed world and Influenza is a virus that it can be done too. The scientific community in the United States is also trying to figure out why on Earth anyone would want to create a MORE deadly form of Bird Flu?
The new virus differs from traditional Bird Flu as the original strain is only able to be passed between humans who have very close contact with each other. The engineered strain is particularly terrifying because it can be passed from coughs and sneezes.
The Bird Flu has been responsible for thousands of death through out the world in the last ten years. It shouldn’t be confused with the Swine Flu, which has killed millions of people over the last century.
Do you think Dutch Scientists should have even tried to genetically alter the Bird Flu Virus?
