Shakwura Dabre: Mother Of NYC Cop Killer, Ismaaiyl Brinsley, Speaks Out About Assassinations

Shakwura Dabre, the mother of NYC cop killer, Ismaaiyl Brinsley, is speaking out about her son assassinating two police officers Saturday in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. The 54-year-old mom breaks her silence and offers her deepest condolences to the victims’ families.

Dabre’s statement was released Monday, expressing how she understands their pain since she’s going through the same grief after losing her own son, according to New York Daily News.

“I am still deeply sorry about what happened at the hands of my son. And please accept my deepest condolences, sincerely. As a mother now I hurt for the loss of my son. Just like they’re hurting for the loss of their sons.”

It wasn’t until Dabre went online and saw her 28-year-old son on a gurney that she realized it was he who had shot and killed the NYPD officers.

“I pulled out my laptop and I went online and I saw his body and I knew he was dead when I looked at it,” Dabre says.

She says when she saw the man laying still on the gurney, she knew it was her son. She was alerted to his death by the “estranged” mother of his child. She wasn’t aware that he’d shot and killed Officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu, however.

“I was so torn when I saw him on that stretcher. Then I found out too that he did that. And I was horrified. Because I didn’t want no loss of nobody’s life.”

The grieving mother says her son had struggled with mental illness all his life. At 13 he tried committing suicide and was later put in an institution. Huffington Post reports on Ismaaiyl Brinsley’s extensive criminal past. He allegedly tried hanging himself as recently as a year ago.

Despite his family’s attempts to help him, he resisted.

“Unfortunately, this situation happened and it culminated in the end of his life and the tragic loss of two innocent police officers,” Dabre continues.

Brinsley had planned out the killings of two NYPD officers. He shot and killed them at 12:47 p.m. outside the Tompkins Houses in Brooklyn. Prior to that, he posted a message to Instagram that read, “watch what I’m going to do.” He taunted police with another message on the site that said he was “putting wings on pigs today. They take one of ours…let’s take 2 of theirs.” He posted the caption with that of the silver gun he planned to use in the assassinations.

The killer shot his ex-girlfriend in Baltimore before embarking to Manhattan on his way to murdering the two police officers in Brooklyn. When police ran after him following the shooting, he took his own life with a shot to the head.
