‘Suicide Squad’ Like ‘Speed’ With Supervillains? Do We Already Know The Main Character?
Warner Bros. Suicide Squad movie is set to establish the latter half of the DC Cinematic Universe, the half with all the good villains, but we don’t really know too much about the film aside from its cast and characters. That might have changed, though, with an apparent leak that spills the beans on Suicide Squad’s main character and just what we can expect to see in terms of the film’s feel.
As always with this sort of thing, it should be said that this supposed leak is just rumor and conjecture with no confirmation from Warner Bros. That said, the contents of this particular leak seem pretty believable.
The leak comes by way of Reddit user oldcomicbookfan – natch; also, h/t: ComicBookMovie – who claims to have been invited to a focus test group on the Warner Bros. lot. The subject of the focus group: the Suicide Squad.
The testers reportedly looked at the participants’ existing knowledge of the Suicide Squad as it currently exists in DC’s New 52 Universe. That’s the rebooted DC Comic continuity that the publisher brought about a couple of years ago, updating all of its characters and doing away with a lot of the comics’ backstory. In particular, the testers wanted to know how familiar the participants were with Harley Quinn, who will be played by Margot Robbie in the Suicide Squad movie.
Harley Quinn popped up quite a bit in oldcomicbookfan’s post, leading us to believe that she will be a central character when Suicide Squad comes to the screen. Reportedly, the plot centers on her skills and her relationship with Jared Leto’s Joker.
“What we were given,” the Redditor writes, “mentioned Harley Quinn being needed to decipher a complex series of bombs planted throughout Gotham. Harley is estranged from the Joker, and her knowledge is being used to figure out where the Joker has placed the bombs.”
It looks like Robbie’s Harley might be the protagonist of Suicide Squad, but the post also mentions details on just what other characters will be up to. Deadshot, who will be played by Will Smith, looks to be the eyes and ears of Amanda Waller, who assembles the group. Deadshot will be tasked with keeping the Squad in line, which should be a tall order, considering the assemblage of villains that make up the Squad.
Without giving too much away, we’ll say that Harley Quinn and the Joker’s complicated relationship may end up throwing a twist into the action of Suicide Squad. And there might be an appearance from another classic DC villain who’s working with the Joker.
As to the look of the film, the Redditor says that the concept art the focus group was shown for Deadshot was his favorite, with “this realistic but tech-geared look.” Other concepts, like those for Captain Boomerang and Enchantress, were “not that great.”
Regarding the film’s feel, we’ve already heard that Suicide Squad is supposed to be like “‘The Dirty Dozen’ with supervillains,” but this new leak points at another movie. Reportedly, Suicide Squad might look toward Speed for some inspiration. The filmmakers may well be looking to bring back “that blend of action with a time sensitive conflict,” though they are supposedly trying to decide whether to go in the direction of “a serious action movie like ‘The Raid’ or a more comedic approach like in the ‘Jump Street’ movies.”
