Spain World Jackpot: Christmas Spanish Lottery Brings Cheer, Breaks Record For Largest Payout

The Spain World Jackpot has made several Madrid residents very rich today. The lottery drawing was held today in Spain, and now a total of $3 billion is being divided between thousands of tickets. However, according to Fox News, a large amount of that money was divided between 100 ticket holders living in a downtown Madrid neighborhood. The residents of the neighborhood that held tickets are now $490,000 richer today.

This special holiday lottery is held each Christmas season, and it does not allow just one winner. Many Spaniards found themselves glued to their television sets today as the drawing aired. They wanted to know if they were one of the lucky winners in this year’s Spain’s Christmas season “El Gordo” lottery. That translates to “The Fat One.”

One woman has already come forward to speak out about her big win and what she plans to do with the money.

“The first thing I’ll do is take my 5-year-old daughter to the Disney theme park in Paris. I’ll pay the debts I have and try to buy an apartment with my husband.”

According to the Mail Online, Joana Lizcano is a restaurant worked who moved from Colombia to Spain 14 years ago. She is now 28-years-old. Arturo Aguirre also won a bit of the $3 billion in lottery money, and he plans to use the cash he won to get himself out of debt. He owns a photocopy shop.

Each ticket for this lottery costs $200. This leads to groups of people pulling their resources to buy one ticket. A person can buy their own share of the ticket for $20.

Today’s drawing is the world’s largest ever. With $3 billion in winnings, this lottery payout overshadows previous large wins. Before today’s drawing, a UK lottery drawing that is equal to $252 million was called the largest lottery payout ever.

This is not the first time a Spain lottery drawing has made news in 2014. In September, the Inquisitr reported about a lost lottery ticket that was found by a very honest man. The ticket was a winner for $6.5 million jackpot. Manuel Reija Gonzalez found the ticket, and he returned it to the shop where he bought it in La Coruna.

Posters covered the city informing people about the lost ticket. Gonzalez did speak out about why he decided to turn in the ticket.

“Because here was somebody who had a problem forgetting his ticket and I put myself in his shoes, and it’s the sort of thing I could have done. I thought the best thing to do was just to return the ticket. We’re still in a phase where it’s all just been made public in La Coruna so really what will be will be and I can’t really tell you how I feel. Here we have a phrase: it’s God’s will.”

Gonzalez will receive the money if the person that lost the ticket does not come forward. What do you think of these lucky winners from the Spain world jackpot? What would you do if you won a large sum of money in the lottery?
