Dakota McNeil is only 10-years-old, but he knows that it's important to think of others before yourself. When he found out his classmate was diagnosed with leukemia, he decided to take matters into his own hands when it came to raising awareness and showing his support.
While many tend to shave their heads in order to show their support for those who are fighting Cancer, McNeil decided that he wanted to do the opposite in order to show his support for his young classmate, Kiki Guite.
According to Global News, Guite and McNeil weren't all that close, but he was moved by Guite's battle and decided that he would grow his hair out and donate it to Locks of Love, a non-profit organization that makes wigs for children who have lost their hair due to medical conditions.
After a year and a half of growing out his hair, this past Thursday, McNeil reportedly chopped off his long locks, according to People magazine.
"I'm excited and a little bit nervous at the same time, 'cause I want it gone. It's annoying," said McNeil moments before sitting down in his school gym surrounded by his peers to have his hair cut.
"It was pretty overwhelming when I found out a 10-year-old was gonna do this for Kiki. I was touched. He has such a big heart and it takes a special person to do that," said Marc Guite, Kiki's father, about McNeil's donations.
Kiki Guite also stated that she was appreciative for all that McNeil has done to help her and raise awareness for her condition.
"I felt happy that he's giving his hair to me and my friends at the Montreal Children's," said Guite.
Dakota McNeil's parents told Global News that this kind of generosity isn't new for McNeil. The 10-year-old was bound and determined to follow through on helping his classmate, even though he did deal with a few hardships, including some teasing from other boys in his class.
It's not every day that someone goes out of their way in order to help another, especially when it comes to young children such as McNeil, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't happen. Dakota McNeil not only donated his hair, but also reportedly raised money and donated it to the family to help pay for Kiki's medical expenses. This 10-year-old was able to do something beautiful for his young classmate, and just in time for the holidays.
