Consumers have often been told that leather gloves and other products imported from China are made from cows. However, a recent investigation conducted by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has reportedly uncovered the shocking truth behind those claims. Apparently, dogs are being used to make leather gloves as opposed to cows.
On Wednesday, December 17, the animal rights organization uploaded a disturbing video that showed the inside of a facility where dogs are killed and skinned to make leather. According to the Daily Mail, a worker employed at the facility revealed the daily massacres result in the death of 100 to 200 dogs each day.
Here’s the graphic description of the horrific footage, which shows the volatile beatings of innocent animals.
“PETA Asia’s undercover investigation reveals that dogs are bludgeoned and killed so that their skin can be turned into leather gloves, belts, jacket collar trim, cat toys, and other accessories. The never-before-seen footage shows slaughterhouse workers grabbing one terrified, yelping dog after another with metal pinchers before bashing them over the head with a wooden pole, rendering some unconscious but leaving others to writhe in agony with severe head trauma. Workers cut the animals’ throats and drain their blood before throwing their bodies onto a pile, where some of the dogs still struggle to breathe.”
The footage has been uploaded on several video sharing sites like YouTube, LiveLeak, and even Twitter and Facebook. Needless to say, many viewers are outraged and heartbroken to see so many innocent animals bludgeoned and killed in such a gruesome manner. More than 1,000 viewers shared their opinion of the disheartening footage via LiveLeak, and hundreds of users have tweeted about the video under the hashtag #dogleather.
Here are some of the comments:
“I made it to 23 seconds and couldn’t watch anymore, as a dog owner this s— makes me so angry, give me a beheading video any day of the week and I will watch it without it affecting me, Animal abuse is the only thing that affects me,” one viewer said via LiveLeak.
“I’m going to check my gloves and belts. I’m going to refuse to purchase anything made of leather from China. It’s one thing to harvest animals humanely but this is just f—ing nasty,” another viewer said.
PETA has also started a petition “Pledge Never to Wear Leather” to boycott the purchase of leather products.
Would you stop wearing leather after seeing how it’s made? Share your thoughts.
