A pair of pit bulls are facing death after they were blamed in an attack that left a Harris, Texas, man grievously injured. According to KHOU, the man, who is still in the hospital undergoing treatment, was attacked by two pit bulls on Wednesday. The incident reportedly happened in the 17300 block of Nanes Drive off I-45 and FM 1960.

According to ABC 13, the man who was attacked was simply was walking down the street when the pit bulls knocked him to the ground. They started biting his legs and attacked him viciously. Neighbors who watched in horror as the event unfolded were initially scared – until one of them intervened to save the man. According to Bill Drout, a resident of the area, he initially thought of getting a gun when he saw the pit bulls attack.

“I thought about taking my gun when I ran out the door and thought, ‘Well, that’s kinda extreme,'” However, upon seeing the pit bulls attack, he thought it was a better idea if he did get the gun.

“I called, ‘Get a gun. Get a gun. Call 911,'” he said.

According to neighbors, the two pit bulls had somehow managed to dig a pit under their fence and managed to get out of their owner’s property. The wife of the owner soon stepped in to help and managed to leash the female pit bull. But the male dog was simply too powerful to be overpowered. When Drout saw that the lady wasn’t able to get the male pit bull off the victim, he decided to jump in.

“I’m pounding this dog as hard as I can with my fist and it didn’t faze him at all. It’s like he didn’t even care. To be honest with you he’s stronger than me,” Drout said. He was finally able to get the male pit bull off, who was quickly leashed in by the owner.

“Grace of God, ’cause I’m thinking as I’m pulling this dog off if this dog decides to turn on me, I don’t, I’m no match for this dog. But what are you gonna do? Leave the dog chewing on the guy’s leg. You can’t, right?” Drout said.

The victim was quickly transported to the Ben Taub Hospital with severe injuries to one leg.

Meanwhile, the owners of the two pit bulls decided to surrender their dogs to the Harris County Animal Control to be euthanized. Sgt. Eric Batton with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said,

“The owner has decided because of previous bite history to surrender his dogs to animal control for euthanization. He made a very responsible prudent decision.”

While the owners of the dog were pretty upset with the decision to euthanize the two pit bulls, they seem to have been even more upset by the attacks that their two dogs have been involved in.

Pit bull attacks across the U.S. has resulted in ban on keeping them as pets on several states. This latest incident might just be one more addition to the bad press pit bulls have been receiving over the past few years.
