David Guetta’s Panic Attacks Stalled His Career

The Grammy Award winning artist David Guetta was on top of the world with a handful of hits when panic attacks crippled his growing career. According to Britain’s Times newspaper, the artist opened up about this troubling time back in 2012.

The French DJ, known for his collaborations with pop stars, started having full on panic attacks that made it impossible for him to work or function in his life.

Guetta opened up to Britain’s Times newspaper about the trying time in his career and personal life.

“There was a moment when I couldn’t make music. I would get in the studio and… Panic attacks are when your brain is completely going crazy because you are doing a lot of ‘What if, what if, what if.'”

Guetta said he was too embarrassed to talk about his issue with people in his professional and personal life. Then everything changed once he met someone that suffered from the same problem at a dinner party. Suddenly, the DJ had an outlet to express his troubles.

“I’m like, ‘Oh really, that’s interesting.’ And I didn’t say I had it. I was really ashamed at the time.” But then he said, ‘There’s one thing you need to understand. No one is going to die. The person who has the panic attack is not going to die. And whatever decision you have to take in your life the person you’re going to hurt is not going to die and if someone is going to hurt you you’re not going to die either.”

So how did the advice shape his life going forward? Guetta explains. “That [advice] helped me so much, it was incredible. The best way is to face it. Say ‘Come on! I’m not afraid of you! Because you know you’re not going to die.”

Back in November, Guetta discussed with Billboard the stresses of taking on a new album. “It’s super challenging to reinvent myself every time — it’s a lot of pressure. I think the point of making a new album is to say something that hasn’t been said before. I think every time I was successful, it’s because I took risks. When I did the combination between urban and house, that was completely against the rules.”
