14-Year-Old Boy Shoots, Kills Intuder To Protect Sick Grandmother In NC

Carlos Delcid, 20, and Isai Robert Delcid, 18, attempted to break into an occupied home in a quiet suburban neighborhood in Mint Hill, North Carolina, on Tuesday evening. A 14-year-old boy was inside the home with his grandmother, according to the Charlotte Observer.

The 14-year-old had been visiting and was helping take care of his ill grandmother, when they heard someone attempting to break through their back door. The teen shot and killed Isai Robert Delcid as Carlos Delcid fled the scene.

Lt. Eric Brady of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Departments told Charlotte Observer that the killing appeared to be justified.

“These people were trying to break into the house, and (the home’s occupants) were trying to defend themselves.”

As police arrived on the scene of the crime, the surrounding area was immersed with officers searching for Delcid. An arrest was made early Wednesday morning, and Delcid was taken into custody and has been charged with first-degree burglary, as reported by WSOC-TV.

George Wyant, the 14-year-old boy’s grandfather who owns the home where the incident happened, heard about the shooting from neighbors. Wyant tells WSOC-TV that they all were shocked by the event.

“It’s not something you can be proud of. But, I’m happy the way it turned out. Because my wife is getting over an illness. What would have happened if he wasn’t there? That’s all I can tell you. What would have happened?”

Wyant continues to reveal that the 14-year-old boy’s father was shot and killed six years ago during a robbery on East Independence Boulevard. According to Wyant’s statement to WBTV, that the teen’s father, Greg Hernandez, “was killed in 2008 at Greg’s Automotive, the auto repair business he operated.”

“He had the hood open in his car. He was a mechanic. It was his garage. Somebody came in and shot him.”

While Isai Delcid, the intruder who was killed, had no previous arrest records, that was not the case of Carlos Delcid. WSOC-TV reports that Delcid was arrested in October on breaking and entering and larceny charges on this very same home that the he and Delcid attempted to rob Tuesday night.

Interestingly, police reports reveal that this particular home has been broken into twice in the past four months, and last night’s attempt made the third.

Wyant is proud of his grandson for doing what he had to do telling WBTV, “I’d say he did a good job.”
