Jakell Mitchell Death: 22-Year-Old Markale Hart Arrested For Murdering Mitchell


There is breaking news in the death of Auburn University redshirt freshman football player Jakell Mitchell, an 18-year-old who was killed in an early morning shooting in the 200 block of West Longleaf Drive. Auburn Police Captain Will Mathews told the media they were developing leads and hoped to have a suspect in custody soon. Now WTVM reports that 22-year-old Markale Hart has been arrested for murdering Jakell Mitchell.

KFVS also reports on the arrest of Markale Hart for the shooting death of Jakell Mitchell, and has a photo of the 22-year-old Hart, who was arrested and charged with murder on Sunday.

The motive and exact circumstances behind the shooting death of Jakell Mitchell, who hailed from Opelika, Alabama, was not made immediately clear in the news reports about the death of the popular student-athlete.

Twitter reactions, like those of Brian Blackmon ( ?@opelikacoach), are proving how shocking the news about the sudden and tragic death of Mitchell are to those who knew Jakell, or followed his burgeoning football career.

“The sadness I feel right now is overwhelming. My hope is in Jesus. My prayers are that Mitchell family will find Peace in Him also.”

As reported by the Inquisitr, it was an off-campus college party where the shooting of Jakell Mitchell took place. The Tiger Lodge at Auburn apartment complex — an apartment complex near the Auburn University campus — has already issued a statement about the shooting of Mitchell taking place on their property.

“A shooting occurred early this morning at our community. The Auburn Police Department and our onsite security officer responded to the incident. That shooting resulted in the death of Jakell Mitchell. We are cooperating fully with police as they investigate this matter. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jakell Mitchell’s family, friends and the entire Auburn University community. When tragedies such as this occur, everyone is affected, and we all mourn his loss.”

Auburn Football (@FootballAU) tweeted their condolences as well.

Markale Hart, of Camp Hill, Alabama, was transported to the Lee County jail, and will be eligible for a $150,000 bond for the shooting death of Jakell Mitchell. Beyond the arrest of Hart, no other arrests are expected to be made regarding Jakell’s shooting death, according to the latest reports from Auburn police, who said they responded at 12:25 a.m. Sunday to the Mitchell shooting.
