Seth Rogen Is ‘Unbelievably Psyched’ About ‘Preacher’ TV Pilot

Seth Rogen is reportedly working on TV pilot based on the 1990s comic book series Preacher. While casting has yet to be announced, Zap2It states that the AMC and Sony Pictures Television co-production is being developed for television by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg through Point Grey Pictures, a film production company they founded in 2011.

Rogen and Goldberg state that Preacher, written by Garth Ennis, has been their favorite comic since it first came out in the mid-90s.

“Garth Ennis is one of our idols and it’s an incredible honor to be working on this. We promise we won’t make too many d**k jokes and ruin it.”

AMC’s executive vice president of original programming, Joel Stillerman, is excited about the project, calling the Preacher comic-book series “bold and compelling.” He thanked AMC “for completely losing their minds” and giving them the opportunity to make the comic-book series into a TV pilot.

“Every once in a while you find a project where all the elements line up beautifully. With ‘Preacher,’ it starts with a bold, compelling, and thought-provoking comic-book series… add to that the passionate and talented Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and Sam Catlin, an incredible producing team in Neal Moritz, the Original Film team and our good friends at Sony Pictures Television, and we have everything we need to be VERY excited to move forward on Preacher.”

TV Line reports that HBO passed on an opportunity to create a Preacher TV series back in 2008 because they thought the comic was “too dark and too violent and too controversial.”

Wall Street Cheat Sheet writes that Preacher comic was first published in 1995 ran for a total of 66 issues, plus another five “one-shot” special issues and a limited four-issue series titled, Preacher: Saint of Killers. The comic is about Texas preacher Jesse Custer who was accidentally possessed in an accident by a supernatural creature named Genesis. When this happened, his entire congregation was killed off and his church destroyed.

The Preacher TV pilot will be directed by Seth Rogen and his partner Evan Goldberg this summer. If you’re excited to see the comic book series come to TV, you’ll have to wait awhile. Zap2It reports that the series won’t be up for consideration until 2016.
