Guardians Of The Galaxy: Grammys, And Oscars, And Sequels, Oh My!

With Guardians of the Galaxy set to release on DVD and Blu-Ray this Tuesday, news surrounding the breakout blockbuster seems to be coming in at a feverish clip. First came the announcement from director James Gunn that while we would definitely see changes in the Guardians line up in Guardians of the Galaxy 2, set to release in 2017, but that the addition of Nova to the group of Guardians would not be one of them. Now comes word that not only has the film’s soundtrack, Awesome Mix: Vol. 1 has been nominated for a Grammy award for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for Visual Media, as well as news that Guardians has been shortlisted for possible nomination for an Oscar award for Best Visual Effects.

The way a shortlist works is that ten films are shortlisted for any given category, and later whittled down to five that will become the category’s nominees. Guardians faces some stiff competition for the Oscar nominee, competing against two other comic book movies, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and X-Men: Days Of Future Past. Other films on the shortlist include Transformers: Age of Extinction, Godzilla, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Interstellar, Maleficent, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, according to Mike Reyes at Cinema Blend.com.

A Grammy win for the Guardians soundtrack is far from a sure thing as well, given the tough competition in that category. Awesome Mix: Vol. 1 faces The Wolf of Wall Street, American Hustle, Get On Up: The James Brown Story, and Frozen in the category. Given how expansive the reach of Frozen’s “Let It Go” has been, it may be a tough win to steal.

As for Gunn’s statement that the popular comic character Richard Rider would not be appearing in the Guardians sequel, Comic Book Resources Assistant Editor Brett White points to the director’s reasoning as given in the comments of a thread Gunn had posted on film regarding the current model of filmmaking.

‘I don’t want Nova right now because I think Quill being the only earthling is important. That serves the entire movie going audience and not just the handful of Nova fans. Sorry if that upsets you.’

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 opens May 5, 2017, and the DVD/Blu-Ray sets of Guardians of the Galaxy hits shelves this Tuesday, with special edition packaging available exclusively at Best Buy, Target, and Wal-Mart.
