Jon Stewart To Angelina Jolie: ‘We Could Have Been A Vodka Brand Together’

Angelina Jolie and Jon Stewart have a long history together — and it’s not just because Angelina has appeared on Jon’s program quite a few times over the years. Back in the days when Stewart was still picking up acting credits, they worked together in the 1998 film ensemble cast film Playing By Heart. Since then, Jolie has become one of the most bankable names in Hollywood, and Jon’s Comedy Central show an iconic take on current events.

When Angelina appeared on Stewart’s show Thursday evening, Jon brought up his life-long admiration of the actress/humanitarian. In fact, he joked that the two may have been a better couple.

“You know, if you had ended up with me instead of Brad Pitt our portmanteau, Stewart-Jolie, would’ve been Stolie. We could’ve been a vodka brand. I’m just saying. That’s my last pitch.”

Even though it’s pretty clear Jon doesn’t think he’s going be unseating Brad anytime soon, he did continue to heap praise on the actress for her huge strides since they first met in 1998, saying that he always knew Jolie was “special.”

“Congratulations on everything. From the moment I met you — I don’t know, it’s gotta be 20 years ago on the set — I always thought, ‘This person has talent coming out of all different areas.’ I don’t meant it in that way. You know what I mean. You just meet certain people and you just go, ‘This person embodies just something different, special.’ I’ve always thought that about you.”

Angelina was, of course, appearing on the show to discuss her new film, Unbroken, her first full feature as writer and director. Stewart also lauded her deft work on the film.

“What you have done here… I was impressed not just with the storytelling, but with the scope. I mean from the war scenes to these incredible scenes in the ocean, to this interment camp. It’s epic, it’s a sonnet. I say to you, respectfully.”

As Jon also took the screen with his first director’s credit this year, the two had a lot to talk about in terms of the trade between acting and directing — especially a lot of the anxiety that came along with it. Jolie, however, walked away from the experience saying that she had fallen in love with the profession in the process.

“I love directing. You’re there fr0m beginning to end… From he music to the tiny little detail of that shark in the water and how it swims and everything — it’ a huge responsibility… I didn’t plan on becoming a director. I wrote something and then I wanted to protect it, so in order to protect it I said I didn’t want anyone else to direct it… there’s films of mine that I still haven’t seen (because of how they turned out).”
