‘Doctor Who’ Showrunner Steven Moffat Talks Christmas Spoilers, And Perhaps A Female Doctor?

Steven Moffat has to be living a charmed life.

The Daily Mail is reporting that Moffat has been speculating on numerous items since the end of filming the Doctor Who Christmas special. And past Season 9.

During an interview at the Hilton Hotel in London, which was presenting the Sky Women in Television and Film Awards, Moffat told Bang Showbiz the idea of a female doctor is not new.

“We’ve been laying in the possibility for an awfully long time, but you don’t cast that way,” Moffat said. “I know I’m going to get in trouble for saying that – you cast a person, you don’t cast the gender.”

For now, Moffat is more than content with Peter Capaldi, who will finish Season 8 as the Doctor, and who has signed on to continue through Season 9. More than that, though, the Season 8 finale introduced the Whoniverse to the Master’s new incarnation, a woman who now is called the Mistress, deliciously portrayed by Michelle Gomez. So a female time lord is not out of the realm of possibility. And the Doctor’s reaction when he finds out tells us that he seems used to female time lords.

But, as Moffat says, finding the proper actress to play the Doctor would be paramount.

“It’s not impossible no, it is entirely down to who the best person is,” he said.

On the topic of Gomez, Digital Spy is reporting that Moffat has been in contact with her. This seems rather impossible, since in the season 8 last episode, “Death In Heaven,” the Mistress was vaporized. But, as Moffat says, that means nothing.

“I can’t imagine anyone who’s ever watched this genre being convinced that she’s dead,” Moffat said. “The Master is never dead, no matter what happens to him or her. She’s entirely unzappable!”

Gomez reportedly has agreed to come back for the role.

Moffat also gave Den Of Geek some spoilers for the Christmas episode, “Last Christmas.”

First, a spoiler on Michael Troughton and his relation to the Doctor: “He doesn’t play the son of Doctor Who or anything, he plays a scientist.”

On his impression of the Christmas special, “Last Christmas,” itself: “scary, tense and claustrophobic… It’s ‘The Thing’ meets ‘Miracle on 34th Street.’ It’s certainly the strangest bloody thing I’ve ever written.”

If you’re a Whovian, that statement should get your attention.

On Nick Frost as Santa Claus in the Christmas special: “Santa is written in properly, in a science-fiction way, into ‘Doctor Who.’ Nick is ideal. He’s what Santa should be in ‘Doctor Who’ land.”

The Doctor Who special will air on BBC One and BBC America on Christmas Day. Please check your local listings for exact time.
