Could Mats Hummels Be Off To Liverpool? German Defender Admits Admiration Of Anfield

Mats Hummels is no stranger to transfer rumors. Last summer, the commanding German center-back was constantly linked to a move to Manchester United, but it may be fierce rivals Liverpool that will win the race for the 25-year-old. Hummels has confessed that he would love to play at one of the most scared stadia in world football: Anfield.

While participating in a Q&A with the official page of the Champions League, Hummels admitted that a stadium he’d like to play at is Anfield.

Despite the tenuous link, Liverpool fans are already purring at the hope of signing Hummels after their meek start to the season, much of which is blamed on the defensive performance on display at Anfield.

Co-founder of the popular Liverpool website This is Anfield, Matt Ladson, admits that “a centre-back pairing of Hummels and Sakho would be among the best in Europe”.

At the moment, a possible move may be far-fetched due to the massive transfer fee it would take to bring Mat Hummels to Anfield, especially after Liverpool announced yesterday that work to expand the stadium to 59,000 seats would commence on Monday.

Liverpool announced the expansion with a photo showing the incredible number of appearances past players made during the club’s glory years, ranging from the 857 of Ian Callaghan between 1960 and 1978 to Liverpool youngster Jordan Rossiter, who has made just one appearance for Liverpool so far in his promising career.

Liverpool captain, Steven Gerrard, who is also featured in the photo, is delighted about the news to expand Anfield.

“It’s very exciting news that we have finally got around to extending Anfield. For me, it was all about staying at Anfield. There have been so many unbelievable nights and memories here, it would have been a shame to leave it all and for this to have become houses or apartments.”

Gerrard, who is currently in the middle of extending his contract at Liverpool, believes that the club is better off with a “traditional” stadium rather than a newer one, due to the fact it provides a better and noisier atmosphere.

“Now that they are going to extend the stadium, it’s going to become even bigger, better and noisier. Hopefully there are many more fantastic memories to come. As much as I like new stadiums, I’m more traditional and I like the old stadiums like the Camp Nou and places like this, where all the history and all the memories happen.”

With the news of expanding Anfield, Liverpool fans will hope that Mats Hummels will try to push a move through in the January transfer window.
