Giuliana Rancic has revealed she is to get a double mastectomy in a bid to battle off breast cancer. Rancic was diagnosed with the illness in August, and revealed it publicly in October.
Along with a statement to E! News, Rancic appeared on The Today Show with husband Bill Rancic to reveal the news. She said she would undergo the mastectomy and reconstruction immediately. In her statement to E!, the 37-year-old said:
“First, I would like to take the stigma away. ‘Mastectomy’ the word seemed so scary to me at first. After doing research and seeing the advancements, the surgery has come a long way from 20 years ago. The results can be incredible. Not only can it save your life, but you can come out feeling healthier and with a positive self-image […] Second, I want to encourage everyone to be proactive with their health and get checked out.”
Rancic admitted it had been a tough decision, and that she had consulted with the finest doctors and radiologists, as well as other women who have had mastectomies and those who opted for alternative therapies. She added:
“I want to make sure to thank everyone and give them an update for being so kind and loving and supportive.”
Her husband Bill has been a rock to her, says Rancic:
“Bill told me, ‘I don’t care about the physical results, I just want you around for another 50 years. I need you healthy. I need you as my wife. I need you as a mother to our kids.'”
Rancic’s surgery is scheduled for next week, and Rancic said she was aiming to spend New Year’s Eve in Times Square. Here’s hoping it’s a success!
