Daniel Craig Says Mike Myers’ ‘Austin Powers’ Ruined The Bond Movies

Daniel Craig has been praised for his portrayal of James Bond for years now. However, there’s much more he would like to do with the Bond series that he’s unable to. He blames this on one person, and that’s none other than Austin Powers himself, Mike Myers.

In an interview from 2012 that’s just surfacing now, Craig said that he had wanted to do the gags that the series was famous for, but was unable to because of the myth that Myers created with his popular Austin Powers franchise.

“We had to destroy the myth because Mike Myers f—-ed us. I am a huge Mike Myers fan, so don’t get me wrong, but he kind of f—-ed us, made it impossible to do the gags,” Craig said.

Mike Myers’ popular franchise was a parody largely based to poke fun of the Bond films. For instance, the baddie, Dr. Evil, was modeled after Bond villain Blofeld, as for the other supporting characters, they were modeled after other characters in the Bond series. Another huge influence was the 70s style which, up until Craig’s rise as Bond, was the peak of Bond’s campy success thanks to Sean Connery and Roger Moore.

Despite that, Craig is adamant about still pushing the humorous aspects of the Bond series in the next film.

“I don’t want to go ludicrous and we’ve got to keep them in reality, but Christ almighty, the world’s f—-ing weird and there’s plenty we can start mining and taking out. If Blofeld turned up again, it wouldn’t be a bad thing.”

No word on what Dr. Evil himself thinks of this old quote.

Do you think Craig and company can make Spectre with a bit of that old-school humor that the series had in the past? As for Blofeld possibly turning up in the series again, it’s going to be hard to top Javier Bardem’s performance. It’s been rumored that Christoph Waltz might take on the role of the film’s villain, but that hasn’t been confirmed just yet.
