Chris Rock Goes Too Far: Jokes About ‘GMA’s’ Robin Roberts’ Cancer Saying ‘Today’ Ratings Hinge On Matt Lauer Getting ‘Sick Next’

After the interview Chris Rock gave New York magazine, many are still processing some of the views he has on a variety of issues. He had a lot to say regarding the Michael Brown shooting in Ferguson, President Obama, the press and white people. Just one day after that interview was released, the comedian adds more to the list. Rock interviewed with Matt Lauer on NBC’s Today Monday morning. He’s promoting his upcoming film, Top Five, which hits theaters December 12.

When Chris and Matt began talking about the ratings war between Today and ABC’s Good Morning America, things got a little out of hand. In fact, Lauer didn’t seem too comfortable with his guest using GMA’s co-anchor as a springboard for making his point.

Rock joked about Robin Roberts’ cancer and said Lauer is next. His quote is recapped by USA Today.

“You’ve got Ray Rice’s wife on, man. You’ll show Good Morning America. We got the wife on! … We’ll show you, Robin Roberts! Matt Lauer is going to get sick next — watch!”

As New York Daily Newsadds in its report, Lauer felt the comment was “cringe-worthy.” All he could do was put his hand over his mouth with a slight laugh and shake his head in response to Chris’ shocking remark.

“We should’ve gone to commercial about 30 seconds ago — too late, my bad!” the Today anchor remarked.

While congratulating Matt Lauer on the interview he booked with Janay Rice, wife of former Baltimore Ravens running back, using Robin Roberts’ serious illness was viewed by some as hilarious. Others saw it as being totally inappropriate.

Chris Rock is good at getting a strong reaction from the public. As the Inquisitr just highlighted in the star’s interview with New York magazine, he feels all whites shouldn’t just be responsible for their actions when it comes to how they treat black people, but for the actions of their forefathers.

When Rock concluded his interview with Lauer on Today, he talked about how his character in Top Five feels pressure to be funny in all situations. He says being a celebrity is so great, it’s almost as good as something else he jokes is even better.

“I love being famous — it’s almost like being white!”

What do you think about Chris Rock poking fun at Robin Roberts’ public battle with cancer? Did he go too far in his interview with Matt Lauer?
