Former Model B. Smith Found In New York After Reported As Missing

Former model and famous restaurateur Barbara “B.” Smith has been found in New York after reported as missing on Long Island. According to CBS, Smith has Alzheimer’s and before she was found news broke that she was last seen in Southampton, Long Island on Tuesday night. She had arrived to Long Island and then disappeared on a Jitney bus.

Husband and partner Dan Gasby alerted authorities that his wife B. Smith was missing when she failed to come home. According to ABC Smith’s daughter made sure the jitney bus driver knew that she got off the Sag Harbor stop in Suffolk County before Smith went on the bus. Unfortunately Smith got off and then got back on and went for the ride back to the city.

Fortunately someone recognized the former model at a diner in the city and called authorities. The restauranteur has been very open about being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, and even spoke out about experiencing confusion and at times memory loss. At the time of her interview with CBS she couldn’t remember the date.

Despite that, back in June she told CBS News of her diagnosis. “I think the future’s going to be fine. I’m going to do my best to make it work out for me, and for as many people that I can possibly help, too.”

Back in her modeling days, B. Smith was on the cover of Mademoiselle and was one of the first African American’s to grace the cover. Later on she moved into her career as a designer and restauranteur. Throughout her life she has owned three restaurants in New York and around the surrounding area. Her first restaurant opened up in 1986 on Long Island.

Additionally her designing career took off in the early millennium when she debuted her collection at Bed Bath & Beyond called B. Smith with Style Home Collection, which included bedding, quilts, window treatments, bath, and area rugs. In 2007 she designed her own furniture line, including a La-Z-Boy, and then later on became the face of Betty Crocker Cornbread.
