Diana Tolstova: Woman With Pacemaker Dies In Airport From Metal Detector
A 30-year-old woman with a pacemaker, Diana Tolstova, passing through a metal detector and scanner at a Russian airport in Ulan-Unde, is dead. According to the Telegraph, Tolstova had to pass through the airport scanner to detect if she had any items that were not permitted. Witnesses say that as soon as Tolstova passed through the scanner device, she became dizzy and collapsed.
Diana Tolstova’s husband, Maxim Tolstova, 33, told authorities that he and his wife presented paperwork indicating that Diana was using a pacemaker that would be affected by passing through the airport metal detectors, but was made to go through the detector anyway.
Diana Tolstova’s husband, Maxim, stated the following regarding the incident.
“I don’t know what happened but she went through it anyway. When we got to the departure gate she began to feel dizzy and suddenly collapsed. I grabbed her in my arms and called for medical help. It took a few minutes before hospital doctors arrived, and when they did they didn’t know what to do. They didn’t give her any first aid and they didn’t call an ambulance. My beautiful Diana died in my arms.”
The Mirror reports that a representative for the airport stated that they have explicit instructions regarding patients wearing pacemakers, and that the victim should never have been allowed to pass through.
“Security and airport personnel are given strict instructions about how to handle people with pacemakers, and we warn them never to let a wearer go through a metal detector. In normal circumstances, they see their papers and let them pass. In this case, the patient seems to either have forgotten about it, didn’t know or became confused by the airport security arrangements. But every patient receives a strict warning.”
