Does Charles Manson Deserve Marital Bliss?

Charles Manson was recently granted a marriage license, with plans to marry his 26-year-old girlfriend Afton Burton. This was met with shock by much of the world, as the story has gone viral with even international news agencies covering the details. Most people are appalled by the news of a young woman marrying the elderly inmate.

Meanwhile, the mother of the bride is defending the marriage, according to Hollywood Life. Melissa Burton says that her daughter is no freak, and that she is not mentally ill or under the bewitchment of the notorious “mass murderer.”

“I don’t believe she’s been brainwashed. She’s a very bright person and she’s never done anything she hasn’t thought through thoroughly.”

Afton Burton reportedly met Manson when she was just 17-years-old, and her attraction to him supposedly has nothing at all to do with his highly sensationalized murder case, as unbelievable as it sounds. Like Manson, she’s a passionate environmentalist and animal rights ally. She also happens to believe that Charles is innocent of the crimes of which he’s been convicted. She’s not alone in that belief; more than 80,000 people can be found on Manson’s official fan page and ATWA pages, which are reportedly moderated by the young bride.

Many people are angry that Charles Manson is getting married, even though TMZ reported that the inmate will not be getting conjugal visits. However, he’ll be allowed to eat vending machine food and “make out” with his new wife at the prison wedding. The #CharlesManson hashtag on Twitter is an ideal display of the sentiments being shared by, apparently, most people.

While some people are making jokes (such as referring to Afton as “The Corpse Bride”), others are completely disgusted.

Does the convicted murderer deserve marital bliss, or are people right to be completely outraged? While many people are simply angered that a “mass killer” is still alive, much less to marry a young woman, others are frustrated at the idea that homosexuals still can’t marry in many states, while a man who will never be freed from prison can.

Charles Manson was married twice before, but both marriages were very brief. Each marriage only lasted about two to three years. His last marriage crumbled in the early 1960s, and he’s remained unmarried all the way until he obtained the marriage license to wed Afton. The geriatric inmate is now 80-years-old, so regardless of the outrage, this marriage won’t last very long.
