Some Doctor Who fans may have been worried about the futures of Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman on the show, but rest assured, at least one of them has signed on for next season. Showrunner Steven Moffat told the Hollywood Reporter that Capaldi is returning for Season 9.
So, yes, you get another Doctor Who season of the 12th Doctor – and there's no real reason to worry about the possibility of there not being another season of the show. The Inquisitr previously reported the rumors of a cancellation and Moffat's response to them. However, Moffat has also confirmed that Coleman is not confirmed beyond the upcoming Christmas special.
Rumors have been circulating that Coleman could be leaving the series after this season, and the events of the season finale have certainly set up a possible exit. After Danny's death, she and the Doctor parted ways, both lying and pretending their lives were good, and while they will reunite this Christmas, it is possible that it will be for the last time.
Speaking of the Christmas special, Digital Spy reported that Moffat promised at the panel for the Season 8 DVD launch that Doctor Who's version of Santa Claus, played by guest star Nick Frost, will not be an alien or a robot.
"Santa could never be evil, for heaven's sake! Santa is both real and a Christmas hero; any parents who are worried about that, Santa is presented as he is in real life – a great Christmas hero!"
The most recent sneak peek of the Christmas special, which you can watch below, shows Clara meeting Santa and an exchange between the Doctor and the "Christmas hero" that teases what's to come.
At the panel, Moffat also compared his role with Doctor Who to "being the curator of the crown jewels or something."
"Each time you make a big shift, which we did this year, then you're properly worried. …At the same time, you have to shut that off in your mind – you've got to treat it like you own it, even though you don't. you have to be bold with it – if all you're ever doing is tending to the upkeep of the monument, then its not going to be a proper TV show."
The showrunner also said that they didn't set out to make Season 8 darker, and neither he nor Capaldi think it was.
"I don't know what they're talking about," the latter said of those who said it was.
Doctor Who returns to BBC America with the Christmas special on December 25. Are you happy that you'll get to see more of Capaldi's Doctor? Do you want Coleman to return as Clara or are you ready for a new companion?
