After the bodies of Miss Honduras Maria Jose Alvarado, 19, and her elder sister, Sofia Trinidad, were recovered by the police beside a river, police officials in Honduras have managed to piece together the circumstances that led to the death of the young beauty queen who should have been in London today as the Miss World representative from Honduras.
The bodies of both women were found buried along the banks of the river Aguagual River in the town of Arada, after they both went missing last week after a party. The missing case garnered worldwide attention because Maria Alvarado had become a celebrity in Honduras after she won the Miss Honduras title earlier this year. She was due to fly to London for this year’s Miss World pageant.
According to officials, Maria Alvarado and her sister were both killed by Plutarco Ruiz, the boyfriend of Alvarado’s elder sister. The reason? He saw Sofia dance with another man during a party. Jealous that his girlfriend had danced with another man, an enraged Ruiz later shot her. Alvarado, who tried to flee from the scene, was shot twice in the back, reports ABC News.
After the recovery of the bodies Chief detective Leandro Osorio said, “We are 100 percent sure that it’s them.”
On Tuesday, police arrested the owner of the place where Maria Alvarado had gone for the late night party. They had also arrested Ruiz and an alleged accomplice. Later, Ruiz spilled the beans regarding the circumstances that led to the killing. Police officials have also recovered a Colt.45 pistol allegedly used to kill the sisters, and also seized two vehicles that were used to dump their bodies. The Honduras Security Minister Arturo Corrales confirmed that Ruiz was indeed the killer, and that he was assisted in the crime by another man, Aris Maldonado Mejia.
“We think that Plutarco led the crime, materially and intellectually,” Corrales said.
Further investigation is on to ascertain if there were other individuals involved in the incident. These are people who, according to police, tried to cover up the shooting by cleaning the premises and repainting the area quickly.
Meanwhile, the organizers of the Miss World pageant announced a tribute and sent their condolences on the death of Maria Alvarado and her sister.
“We are devastated by this terrible loss of two young women, who were so full of life. We will be holding a special service with all of the Miss World contestants on Sunday, where we will be honoring the lives of Maria Alvarado and Sofia Trinidad, and say prayers for them and their family,” a statement issued by them said.
They have also decided to donate money to a children’s home in Honduras in the memory of the two women.
In an earlier report, the Inquisitr reported how Maria Alvarado’s mother had made a tearful appeal calling for the release of her daughter.
