Demi Lovato Talks Anorexia, Social Media’s Impact On Body Image

Demi Lovato is just 22 years old, but when she speaks in interviews it is easy to forget that she is so young. The former Disney star is wise well beyond her years, but that wisdom may be what has helped her gain such a huge fan base. Rather than trying to look like the media’s definition of perfection, Lovato ensures that she is beautiful to herself. That beauty radiates into everything that does, showing that not only does she have a beautiful voice, but also a beautiful attitude.

Fans of Demi Lovato are likely aware that she has not always had the most positive attitude. In fact, when she was just 18 years old, the singer opened up about her struggles with anorexia and bulimia. Both are serious eating disorders which can be hard to overcome. Not only do these disorders impact a person’s outward appearance, but they also change the way a person suffering from these disorders thinks.

Lovato recently spoke out to Glamour and revealed that while she has overcome both eating disorders, it isn’t uncommon for those old eating habits to kick in. Rather than conforming to a diet, though, Demi Lovato says she follows a strict routine and that her nutritionist helps by sending her meals when she is busy touring.

Touring is something that Lovato is doing at the moment, too. Through the rest of November Demi Lovato will be touring in Europe, but will return to the United States for a few shows in December. Despite being busy promoting her music, she still finds time to encourage her fans. In fact, she is quite active on social networking and she admits that she does enjoy seeing what her fans have to say. Of course, not everything is always positive.

It is the negativity that Demi Lovato revelaed impacted her in the past. These days, though, she says she is able to laugh them off. Nevertheless, she was open about the impact of social media on her life.

“Social media started impacting my life when I was about 14 years old. I would check it obsessively, reading comments and wondering if people noticed that I’d gained or lost weight. I allowed social media to define what I thought of my body. And now I realize that no matter how thin you are, someone will call you fat. No matter how beautiful you are, someone will call you ugly. But you can’t spend your time worrying about that. You’re just not going to please the world.”

These days, though, Demi Lovato doesn’t let the negative comments on social media impact her negatively. Although it is a hard thing to do, she has learned how to filter out the negativity. According to the Inquisitr, Demi has also used her social networking to speak out about eating disorders in the past.

It probably helps that she has a wonderful boyfriend who helps encourage her as well. Demi Lovato has been dating Wilmer Valderrama for a while and, earlier this year, the two even sparked rumors that they were engaged. While there doesn’t appear to be a ring on Demi’s finger just yet, these two are still very much in love. In fact, Lovato stepped out of her comfort zone and posted a personal photo of her and her boyfriend on Instagram according to E! Online. This is something that Lovato rarely does, but her fans love to see her happy!

It is great to hear Demi Lovato speak out about her past and to continue to positively influence her fans.
