Postal Workers Sleeping: Long Island Postal Workers Caught Sleeping, Lying About Doing Their Jobs

Postal workers were caught sleeping during a recent raid by investigators. According to the New York Daily News, 10 workers at the facility were fired on Friday. The employees were supposed to be repairing mail trucks, but instead were caught snoozing during their overnight shifts.

“Special agents raided the 24-hour facility early Friday, took photos of sleepers and then woke them up and fired them. Investigators started working on the case in June 2013, based on an anonymous tip. The 10 employees were all hired to work from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. performing mechanical and body work on damaged mail trucks,” reports the New York Daily News.

The postal workers were sleeping pretty much anywhere they could get comfortable. Some took naps inside the trucks that they were supposed to be working on, while others made a makeshift bedroom right on the floor of the manager’s office — many even brought blankets. The workers must have had this routine down because they made sure that everything was done just right as to not get caught.

“They covered windows with cardboard, locked gates with chains they brought from home and even hung a baby monitor nearby,” said one employee.

According to Newsday, the employees fabricated work orders, but the work never actually got done. Although no one was arrested or charged, there is a chance that some if not all of the workers will face criminal charges.

The postal workers caught sleeping in Hicksville weren’t the first group of postal workers to get in trouble, nor will they be the last. As previously reported by the Inquisitr, a USPS employee was caught tossing packages, many of which were fragile, into the back of a mail truck. The video was posted back in May, and many couldn’t believe what they were seeing.

The United States Postal Service released the following statement after the video went viral.

“The Postal Service takes seriously all issues regarding customer service. We extend our apologies for this incident. The video is disappointing and does not represent the kind of service we strive to provide our customers, or the manner in which the majority of our employees handle packages.”

Many believe that the USPS is in financial danger, and that mail delivery could change in the not-so-distant future (there has already been talk of eliminating Saturday mail delivery to cut back on costs), and stories like this don’t help the situation.
