Here’s What ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ Director James Gunn Had To Say About DC’s Movie Lineup

While Marvel’s idea of a shared universe is something we all take for granted nowadays, the fact remains that no other studios have yet to fully capitalize on its success. Warner Bros. and DC have a roadmap of sorts, with their recent lineup announcement, but all they have so far is Man Of Steel, which was completed before they had decided to commit to the idea of a shared universe. As of this writing, Marvel has made 10 films in its cinematic universe, the last of which was Guardians of the Galaxy — a movie that’s gone on to become the most successful first movie in a single franchise, and third in Marvel’s overall franchise thus far. The film’s director, James Gunn, recently sat down with IGN, and opened up about his thoughts about DC’s lineup of films.

“The truth is, it’s a list of titles, and if they’re done well they’ll be good. If they aren’t, they won’t be good. But I think we have a little bit more of an idea of what we’re getting with Marvel. I mean, we know the actors, we know the characters — we’ve seen movies with these characters. You have some idea of what’s going on already. We’ve told a big part of the story. With DC, they haven’t told the story yet.”

Not quite a scathing line, but definitely not the diplomatic talk we normally hear from both sides, though it would be a lie if Gunn said anything else. The fact remains that Marvel has the unparalleled success and experience in this department. While DC’s lineup is great on the eyes, and promising for the franchise, they still have yet to bring it together in any meaningful way, and until they do have a fully successful film (Man Of Steel was polarizing at best), everything they put on the table is all theoretical.

Darkseid and Thanos too similar?
Marvel’s Thanos (Left) and DC’s Darkseid (Right). Too close for comfort?

There have also been rumors that DC’s big villain Darkseid, who has some similarities to Marvel’s Thanos (though ironically, Darkseid made his comic debut prior to Thanos), will be showing up in one of DC’s Justice League flicks. This rumor has brought many to question if having Darkseid in the DC cinematic universe would be too similar to Thanos.

“That would be pretty weird, I think,” Gunn told IGN. “That would be a strange choice.”

Since DC is second to the game on this one, the last thing they want is for audiences to think they are just copying the competition, but it’s all hearsay at this point.
