Jason Wahler is a new man. Years after he wrapped filming on The Hills, the former bad boy of reality television has done a complete turn around. Now married and living in Southern California, Wahler opened up about his time on the MTV series, revealing he was struggling with addiction while dating the show’s star, Lauren Conrad.

“People always, the first thing they ask me is ‘Do you blame those shows?’ No. Not at all,” Wahler, who appeared on 2010’s Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew, explained to Us Weekly of his struggles with substance abuse. “If anything, I’m grateful because it ignited the addiction faster, and I’m not 40 years old with a family suffering through it. It hit hard, and I was able to see it sooner than later.”

On Laguna Beach, Jason Wahler dated a few members of the cast, including Jessica Smith and Alex Murrel. Once the show wrapped, he reunited with ex-girlfriend Conrad on The Hills, which followed the couple as they attempted, unsuccessfully, to get their relationship back on track.

As the Inquisitr reported, Wahler married model Ashley Slack in October 2013, the same month Conrad became engaged to her now-husband William Tell. One year later, the Inquisitr reported Conrad and Tell had tied the knot.

“She did a lot of interviewing with me, it was more of who I am and what I’m like, so it was very positive,” Wahler said of his early relationship with Slack. “The actions speak … you can see it comes from the heart, and she’s my everything.”

As for Lauren Conrad, she and Jason Wahler have cut ties.

“I don’t really talk to Lauren at all anymore, the last time we talked was probably 6 months ago or something. She’s a sweet girl, and we are just totally different personalities and she is super, super sweet. She’s very kind and good at what she does. We’re just two completely different personalities — [and] me being full fledged in my addiction during that time, that did not help.”

Now sober, Wahler is grateful for his hard times, since they’ve made him into the man he is today. “I was so caught up with stuff on the outside — what society depicts is awesome whether it’s fame, money, cars — it’s important to embrace in everything and spend more time with family and friends and things that I cherish so much now,” he said.

Jason Wahler is currently filming a documentary about his life. No word yet on when the special will air.
