New York’s “Cannibal Cop” Sentenced To Time Served

The former New York City police officer who was charged with conspiring to kill, then eat, his wife was sentenced to time served on a lesser charge. Gilberto Valle, New York’s so called “Cannibal Cop,” had been convicted by a jury on conspiracy charges in July, but, as CBS New York reported, the initial conviction of the “Cannibal Cop” was overturned by the presiding judge.

If the conspiracy conviction hadn’t been overridden, the “Cannibal Cop” could have faced a life sentence. Instead, Valle was convicted on a misdemeanor for unlawfully accessing a federal database and sentenced to time served. The term for the crime is one year, but the “Cannibal Cop” had already served longer than that term.

The “Cannibal Cop” was arrested in 2012 and served 21 months in jail. He will also be on probation for one year and he has also been ordered to continue going to mental health sessions and to stay away from the women mentioned in the case.

The former cop was nicknamed the “Cannibal Cop” by local tabloids after he was initially arrested. New York prosecutors had charged the “Cannibal Cop” with conspiracy because Valle had talked to others online about kidnapping, killing, cooking and then cannibalizing women’s bodies.

As the New York Post reported, the federal judge, Paul Gardephe, that overturned Valle’s conviction last summer is the same judge who meted out punishment to the “Cannibal Cop” today. In a statement at sentencing, Valle apologized to his wife, the NYPD, his former schools and his family.

“I just want to apologize to all those institutions. They gave me the tools to live a productive life. It was my fault for doing all of this. My actions were so stupid.”

The “Cannibal Cop” said that the other women mentioned during the case, who were former female friends, didn’t deserve what he brought to them.

“I really want to say I’m sorry to the women who were involved in this case, who were so undeserving of all this attention — their names being in the papers. It still bothers me a lot. But I just hope they truly know they were never in danger.”

Cannibalism seems to be the new trend as the “Cannibal Cop” isn’t the only man in the news arrested for cannibalism. As the Inquisitr reported, a man was arrested for cannibalism in Indiana for eating his girlfriend’s organs and a woman was arrested after breaking into a house and biting the occupants as part of a zombie game.
