Protesters Burn Palace After Killers Confess To Massacre Of Missing Students

A mob of protesters tried to storm the Mexican presidential palace and burn its doors after a video aired regarding the plight of 43 college students who went missing in September. The video showed three gang members confessing to killing the students with the cooperation of police.

The students had traveled to Iguala, which is a town in southern Mexican, to protest their school’s lack of funding. UPI reported that the mayor of Iguala, Jose Luis Abraca, may be aligned with the gang whose members confessed and triggered protesters to burn the palace.

The last time the students turned protesters were seen alive was on Sept. 26 in Iguala. The local police attacked the students, and they were never heard from again. CNN reported on Friday that Mexican authorities said the remains of the 43 students may have been found, but they couldn’t confirm the identity of the bodies until DNA tests were done.

The remains showed signs of being burned and were found in a river in southern Mexico. The state of the bone fragments and teeth could make it difficult to extract DNA and identifying the bodies could take some time. Parents of the missing students are skeptical of the discovery as they do not trust the police. Many of the students’ parents are among the thousands of protesters who have been at the presidential palace for several weeks.

The Daily Mail reported that authorities believe Abraca was the mastermind of the massacre. He and his wife, Maria de los Angeles Pineda, were arrested while hiding out in Mexico City. The couple are two of approximately 70 people who have been arrested in connection with the students’ disappearance.

Mexico’s Attorney General, Jesus Murillo Karam, who released the video confessions which lead to protesters trying to burn the palace, said Iguala police handed over the students to the gang members after they had attacked and detained them. The three who confessed are associated with the gang Guerreros Unidos. In the taped confession, they claimed to have stacked the bodies of the students, some while still alive, and set fire to them.

As the Inquisitr reported, Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto is facing mounting pressureto resign from the protesters and others concerned about how the government has handled the investigation of the students disappearance. Combined with the aired confession, Nieto’s current trip to China seems to have further incited the protesters in their attempt to burn the palace.

Even with mounting evidence that the 43 missing students are dead, some parents are refusing to believe it and are holding out hope that their children are alive.

A man, whose son is among the missing, stated,

“The government is trying to resolve things its way so that to rid itself of this great problem it is facing. My son is alive. My son is alive. My son is alive.”
