Mayim Bialik: A ‘Big Bang Theory’ Non-Spoiler (Or So She Says)

Mayim Bialik placed a “spoiler-free” Big Bang Theory post on her Kveller blog on October 20th. At least, the actor claims it is spoiler-free, but regular fans of the series might see there are some significant changes afoot for Amy and Sheldon — commonly known as “Shamy” — on the popular sitcom.

“Big stuff. Fancy eye shadow for me is involved. And wavy hair for the first time since I joined the cast four years ago. It’s sweet. Lots of fanciness. And some great Sheldon and Amy stuff. You’re going to be very surprised. And delighted. That’s all you get…!”

While for other sitcom stars, wavy hair may not be big news, for Amy Farrah-Fowler it is a big change. Bialik’s character is known for her straight, mousy brown hair and bespectacled face. Farrah-Fowler is a biologist, and since Bialik is a real life Ph.D. in neuroscience, a Biography interviewer asked if she is, indeed, acting at all. In the interview published last week, Bialik admitted there are similarities and said she doesn’t mind the label of “character actor.”

“Well, I don’t have a lab full of coked-up monkeys with nothing to lose. So yeah, I’m probably acting a little bit…I was a weird kid. I was a weird teenager. I’m a weird adult. It’s funny because in some sense I feel like maybe I’m less of an impressive actor, because I’m strange in real life. But yeah, ‘character actor’ works for me.”

Bialik started acting as a teenager, working alongside Bette Midler in Beaches at age 12 and star of the sitcom Blossom at age 14. Asked the differences between fame, then and now, Bialik pointed out the additional pressure actors are under in the modern age to maintain a certain image. Admitting that when she was a youngster, Seventeen refused to put her on the cover despite the popularity of Blossom because of her unusual look, Bialik said social media has made it tougher.

“[N]ow young women in the entertainment industry are expected to walk all of the red carpets and look a certain way – put on designer clothing, have plastic surgery, wear Spanx, and all that stuff. I think that would have been incredibly overwhelming and very stressful for me when I was a teenager… I think you need to be very aware these days of how much of yourself you show and in which ways. It’s just part of the job now.”

That kind of image-watching is perhaps best-encapsulated by the fan interest when Bialik’s Theory co-star, Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting, got a new pixie cut earlier this summer. As for modern-day Bialik, she creates controversy by expressing views on her Kveller blog, such as her dislike of the film Frozen.

The Big Bang Theory is back to its regular Thursday-night timeslot on CBS.
