Berlin is such a art-filled city that it’s not surprising that a massive art project would mark the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. While there are no doubt several odes dedicated to the remembrance the event in the city this year, one of the most prominent is Lichtgrenze, which literally translates to “border of light.”

Balloons with an unearthly glow line an entire 10-mile stretch of where the wall once stood. Such a massive project, especially with such an important deadline, was a miracle to get together on schedule, reported Wired.

Light artist Christopher Bauder and his filmmaker brother Marc began working on the concept for Lichtgrenze seven years ago, before the 20th anniversary of the wall coming down. But as you might imagine, building the equipment necessary to hoist and illuminate 8,000 balloons—not to mention getting approval to install them throughout a major metropolis—takes some time and bureaucratic elbow grease. The duo just couldn’t get it done in time.”

What do you think of Lichtgrenze as a commemorative structure for the fall of the Berlin Wall?
