Dwayne Johnson has confirmed that Shazam! will be fun and independent, and in the process he also revealed that it won’t be tied into the Justice League film.
Johnson made the comments when he was asked by a fan on Twitter if Shazam! would have a cheerier and funnier disposition than Zack Snyder’s Man Of Steel, Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, and Justice League films.
The former WWE icon then confirmed that would be the case as he wrote that Shazam! is a “NL/DC property” before adding the hashtag “#Independence.” He went on to add, “I guaran-damn-tee we’re gonna have bad ass fun w/Black Adam.”
It had previously been speculated that Shazam! wouldn’t tie into the burgeoning DC movie universe and that it would exist as its own entity. According to Comic Book, Warner Bros. had placed New Line, which it owns, in charge of overseeing any other DC Comics film that weren’t really in the Justice League universe.
Toby Emmerich, who is the president over at New Line, previously teased that this would be the case back in September. While speaking to Entertainment Weekly he explained, “It feels to me like Shazam will have a tone unto itself. It’s a DC comic, but it’s not a Justice League character, and it’s not a Marvel comic. The tone and the feeling of the movie will be different from the other range of comic book movies.”
Emmerich was also at odds to insist that Shazam “will have a sense of fun and a sense of humor” before he warned “but the stakes have to be real.”
This came after Dwayne Johnson confirmed that he would be playing the Black Adam character in Shazam. Johnson presence will certainly give the film a different flavour and style to its contemporaries. However, we won’t be able to truly decipher how original it will be until Shazam is cast and the film’s writer and director are confirmed.
DC’s burgeoning movie universe began with 2013’s Man Of Steel and will be followed in 2016 by the hugely anticipated Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice. This will then be followed by a cavalcade of comic book delights with Suicide Squad coming soon after in 2016 too, before Wonder Woman, Justice League Part One, The Flash, Aquaman, and then Shazam, Justice League Part Two, Cyborg, and the Green Lantern will all follow before 2020 too.
