‘Mario Kart 8 ‘ Amiibo Support Dated, Figures Revealed Via Leak

Nintendo announced a Nintendo Direct broadcast for Wednesday, Nov. 5 to make some Wii U and Nintendo 3DS announcements. It looks like one announcement for Mario Kart 8 and the amiibo figures came too soon, via the game maker’s website.

A premature update to the Mario Kart 8website cropped up which may or may not load properly for you. Details were captured by NeoGAF, Reddit, and other sources revealing that a software update will be available to download on Thursday, November 13th to allow the game to work with amiibo figures. The update is conveniently timed since the figures will hit retailers on November 21st, along with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

According to the Mario Kart 8 amiibo page, players will be able to customize their Mii racers with costumes based on the amiibo figures. The actual racing suits have not been revealed yet.

Here is the list of 10 amiibo figures that will provide Mii racing suits in Mario Kart 8 so far. This part of the first wave of figures with a second wave coming later this year.

  • Mario
  • Luigi
  • Yoshi
  • Peach
  • Donkey Kong
  • Link
  • Kirby
  • Captain Falcon
  • Samus
  • Fox McCloud

These same figures will support more features for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. Each figure will store data based on progress in the game and can spawn computer-controlled characters in matches. The characters will level up the more that they are used and learn new abilities.

Mario Kart 8 DLC

The Nintendo Direct will kick off at 5 p.m. ET / 2 p.m PT on Wednesday. Presumably, information will also be revealed about first Mario Kart 8 DLC pack. It is slated for “late November” so the broadcast tomorrow seems like a perfect time to reveal a date. We wouldn’t be surprised to see it arrive as the same time as the amiibo figure software update.

The 2014 holiday line-up will likely be a big focus for tomorrow’s Nintendo Direct. That means details on Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker for the Wii U. Big upcoming Nintendo 3DS titles include Pokemon Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby, Sonic Boom, Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth, and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy.
